Hi everyone, I’m having trouble with VCarving on my OF Elite Foreman, masso, and using carveco maker.
I have no problems using a 90degree bit, it works as it should, but as soon as I switch to a 30 or a 20 for really deep cuts for epoxy or vcarve inlays the tool path seems to want to go over the same path 20 times before stepping down, I am doing a small maple leaf as we speak, used 1/8” end mill to rough, and I’m going .325 deep, it’s been going for about 2 hours now and it’s only about 20% finished the job.
I’m having trouble understanding what exactly you’re trying to do. The bit itself won’t cause a particular thing to happen, the type of toolpath will. Is this a profile toolpath? Did you put a ramp into it? That’s the only setting I can think of that would cause this. It’s quite possible that there is a ramping called for that has settings with very shallow ramping. Or, do you mean it does a full pass over the entire cut area, then goes back and does it all over again, and again, and again 20 times?
I realize changing a bit doesn’t change settings, but it only happens when I change the bit in the toolpath, it’s running a vcarve toolpath. And yes I don’t know how many times it’s actually going over it, but it’s above 10 for sure, it goes over the same depth multiple times, then steps down and goes over the entire thing at the new depth multiple times and so on until it reaches the depth I specified.
Gotcha. Sorry, made some bad assumptions. I have never used the V-bit carving toolpath. I assume you have used it before and this is unexpected behavior. The only thing that comes to mind for me is it is creating that V groove at multiple depth passes which means for each pass of course, the tool isn’t wide enough and needs to step over and go around again. I’m just guessing though, so I’ll leave it up to someone else who may know.
Start by opening your tool database in V-Carve, select the bit in question and see what the depth per pass is set to. Most of mine I keep at .125 and let it fly at about 150 IPM, although a decent bit should tolerate 200IPM at that depth.
Thanks for the help guys this was the problem. the tool I was using has a default stepover of .001 and step down of .0005 I changed it to .125 for both and solved my issue.
