Has anyone ever attached a gas strut here? There’s a keyed area with screw holes and screw holes on the z axis directly in-line with the keyed area. IMO it looks like what these two features were designed for, but no official documentation seems to reference it.
The areas you are highlighting are for mounting an IR homing sensor and trigger.
Gas struts are not always the best solution, especially in this case where high (and fast) cycle rates are required. The small size with correspondingly small internal volume is also not ideal.
After researching options for my custom build I decided on using constant force springs over other typically used solutions on CNC Z axes.
