Z probe stutter

I have an x-35 woodworker. Today I started having a problem using the z zero probe (block and magnet). I can move the z up and down with the controller but when I hit z probe with the block it stutters until it times out. I’ve tried going from higher up and it works for a few turns then stops. In the attached video I had the spindle removed but touched it off to the block just to get a clear view. I took the stepper off and blew everything clean, also tightened bolts. Z works fine when running or using the controller. Any ideas? Thanks.

Have you cleaned the ball screw nut?

Yes. The z zero is one issue the second is that it slams through the workpiece in exactly the same spot like it loses z zero. I updated software and will try again tonight. I zeroed it using paper since I could get the block to work.

it sounds like you have a broken wire in the probe
. unplug it from the block and check for continuity. you can easily fix it yourself if it is broken.

I tried

  • taking the stepper motor off and cleaning the z axis/blowing out connections
  • looking for loose wires on the probe and stepper motor
  • updated vcarve
  • looking at gcode to make sure it wasn’t missing steps

Finally noticed that the z axis was not going all the way up when I honed it. There was an “over” error in the tool path column. I unhomed it, used the controller to raise it all the way up and hit home. That fixed it.
