Zeroing Z after bit change

When carving a large contoured surface, how do you zero after a bit change if you do not have access to your wasteboard surface (to large of carve) and don’t have a flat stock top remaining? Can you manually input what z should be by calculating it off of a known point on the carving by touching prior to bit removal and again by touching after bit change?

I think with proper planning you will have a place to probe 99% of the time but just to go with your scenario, yes, you can always put your bit where it is zero and then zeroize from the controller screen. Even if there is no place left at zero you can go to that spot that is -12mm, come up 12mm, and then zeroize.

Ah good call… Wasn’t thinking completely that I could essentially use the current bit to probe a location to know depth from z and the after replacing the bit probe the same and offset back to the original z. Figured it was just a math problem apparently I should think in the garage/workshop instead of on the couch…
