1.5 Beta 3 for BB Controllers (9/23/24) (outdated firmware)

I would expect that it’ll be by the end of the month. The rotary that’s shipping in a couple of weeks needs upgraded firmware. I’m guessing the 1.5 beta will be rolled into it.

Just an update as to where the firmware stands.

we’ve been working simultaiously on this 1.5 firmware and ‘rotary’ firmware. We couldn’t release the ‘rotary’ firmware to beta as it would ‘spill the beans’ for our november announcements and launch.

So, we’ve been calling rotary firmware 1.6 internally. It does not have the ‘fixes’ that this 1.5 betas have. We don’t want to ‘break’ the rotary with any potential bugs this one has and visa versa at this point.

We’re going to roll out ‘rotary’ firmware very soon as it just finalized today.

So, what should we number the next firmware release? 1.6 so as to not confuse the release with this 1.5 beta release? Then this 1.5 beta get’s moved to be called 1.7?

Or 1.5 since that’s the next logical step in numbers?

Give us your thoughts?

Sounds like a good idea (not adding too much new stuff). Maybe the rotary firmware could be 2.0 to signify the major change of adding a 5th axis. I would assume that in the future there will just be one current firmware that will work whether or not you have a rotary.

I’ve been holding off ordering a second SD card as a backup until the rotary firmware is released. I asked information if it was possible to ship the SD card with the rotary but didn’t get an answer.

I was just coming here to post that i’ve have a number of successful laser projects, and a batch of 8 cnc vcarve signs that are working great for actual projects on 1.5b3. In practical use I haven’t needed the feature to recall work origin/home after stop or reboot, so not really testing those further yet.

As far as the version number for 1.6 rotary, it does seem weird to not include fixes/features from 1.5b3, but I understand not wanting to launch with untested new code. I see the git release was already tagged 1.6.0, so i suppose the apparent relative few of us who tested 1.5 will understand the situation. (but thanks for asking!) If you’re looking for alternatives, I could make an argument that you could call it “1.4.2” or “1.4.1 R” or something, as it’s the newest release supporting rotary, but without the new 1.5 features.

I would do any fixes to 1.5 Beta3 and release a Beta 4 non rotary - then roll in Rotary and call it 1.7 Beta 1.

We’ll, we changed it up and are going to release 1.6 with the 1.5 beta 3 improvements :stuck_out_tongue:

Final build should be out this week!
