Lets just say you do NOT sell a $3,000 dollar machine and after a year or so SAY… O by the way if you want any new features, you need to send me more money… Not going to happen..
Just for some clarification from Onefinity side so far (as of 4/4/25 11am):
- Lack of prior notice: Masso did mention they were considering a shift to a subscription based service, Onefinity made it clear that they strongly disagree with that decision. Onefinity was not informed whether this would be a definitive change or when it would take effect. Just like everyone else, Onefinity was caught by surprise when the email went out today.
- No financial gain for Onefinity: Onefinity is not benefiting from this subscription in any way; it’s a direct payment to Masso, Onefinity does not receive any portion of these funds.
- Disagreement with the charge: Onefinity strongly disagrees with the idea of charging for bug fixes and firmware updates.
- Firmware functionality: Masso controllers will come with the most current firmware preloaded when shipped, and the controller will work out of the box without needing to pay for any updates or subscriptions. This subscription is to their app, not to their controller. We are still trying to clarify if this affects Masso Link (ability to send gcode via WiFi to their controller.)
- Online vs offline use: The subscription only affects online features like remote monitoring and software updates. Offline use will not be impacted at all.
- Action point: If customers are unhappy with the decision, Onefinity encourages them to voice their concerns on the Masso forum (not on Onefinity’s forum), as Masso doesn’t monitor Onefinity’s forum, so posting here won’t let them know users opinions.
Here is the forum link for Masso. https://forums.masso.com.au/
We’ll will share more info as we get more concrete answers from Masso.
It looks like their last two software releases were in Beta for well over a year. So we will be forced to pay a yearly subscription for software that may not be delivered within the period of one year. This seems more like extortion.
YES we still LOVE you 1F. The best support and product on the market by far. We just need to move forward with a better solution …someday
Don’t get us started on new firmware updates from Masso WHAT A BIG JOKE..
I have been on the Masso forum this morning as well and from what I can see those folks are just as angry as we are here. but we need onefinity to know how upset we are as well. If no one cared then you would be inclined to do nothing but as you can see It is not looking good. So onefinity might want to hurriedly begin looking for an alternative for all its customers.
Yes Masso forum is not helpful at ALL
I wonder if 1F is thinking about using a different controller? I have a knee mill that is CNC only that was built decades ago. The previous owner converted it to a Dynomotion controller but only part way. To finish it using their parts is cost prohibitive vs it’s value. I was looking into switching to a Masso but now I’m thinking Acorn may be the way to go.
Just so you know i emailed Masso.com with the following. I also encourage you all to do the same. take a few minutes out of your Friday to tell them directly how you feel about this travesty. here is the text of my message to them.
:::Message Body:
I just wanted to tell you that due to your horrible subscription service decision I will be cancelling the order I had placed with onefinity CNC with the Masso controller. If I wanted to lease a controller (and that is the effect, it will have), I would have bought a commercial machine not a hobby machine. The onefinity Forum, as well as your own, is full of angry people that hate what you are doing. I think you are reprehensible selling thousands of machines and then suddenly pulling a stunt like this. No one signed up for this knowing you would suddenly begin charging for what you once represented as including bug fixes and updates. If it is not illegal It should be. I feel that you were and are dishonest with your customers, and thus I will no longer be ordering the onefinity elite with the Masso controller and I think many others will be doing the same thing.
let them have it boys and girls. tell’em what you think about their crappy decision.
I understand your edit and effort to further clarify their announcement.
I personally do not put future software upgrades into the web based feature category.
I look forward to hearing an official reaction and clarification from Masso regarding this announcement.
This subscription is to their app, not to their controller.
How do you square that with this highlighted snippet from their email that seems to directly say that “future MASSO G3 updates will require a subscription”? That seems pretty clear they are talking about the controller.
So just curious how is this any different than what goes on with VCarve updates? I bought VCarve Pro a few years ago and I believe they recently released version 12. I can either stay with the 11.5 I have or pay to upgrade to the new version, no? I get how ridiculous the bug fix part is, but don’t most places charge for software upgrades? I understand lots of people ordered massos on Black Friday, myself included, with the expectation that upgrades were free. I’m not surprised by this, but hopefully there is a much lower rate for simply upgrading every couple of years etc
Do you have to pay a mandatory yearly fee to VCarve? - I hope what they have worded here is not correct
If you don’t want the new functions in Vcarve you can still use the software. If you find a bug or need a fix then you have no choice with Maso and you have to keep paying forever. two very different things.
Hey guys! Much better to move this convo over to the masso forum so they can actually see this! (masso does not monitor our forums.)
Here’s the link!
Now I am very glad I did not upgrade away from the BB when I had the cash flow in Jan. I bought a new fat bike instead.
Looks like I made a better choice than I thought.
Since Masso is based in Australia and a privately heald company still, it might be that investors were looking for a increase on revenue, That’s the only reason I can see to switch.
When I am ready to upgrade I’ll start to look at Rasp pi 5 based with a little custom work I would hope to keep stall homing too.
I agree that the Masso forum is a good place to have this conversation it’s also good to have it here. Anyone who is on the edge about which controller to buy should read this. I’m glad to see that 1F is opposed to this. Still it’s good for them to know that if they decide in the future to require a subscription to get updates for the BB controller they will face lots of angry people. Hopefully it’s not lost on us customers how lucky we are that 1F continues to improve their in house controller without charging us for the updates.
My biggest issue is what happens if you get a Masso controller after April 15th? What if you don’t pay? Will the controller not work? Will you just be stuck on the firmware version currently on it? Will you have to connect it to the internet to use the controller? I’m fine with them charging for additional features that if I don’t use or want I just don’t pay. But I remember a Masso update not long ago that was a safety issue.
I hope those of you who have an account on Masso’s forum let them know of the lost sales they are suffering. Since I don’t own any of their products I’m not going to join their forum to let them know how I feel.
The big concern I’ve got here is that I expect that there will need to be a firmware update to support the Easy ATC I haven’t even received yet. They readily admit the current firmware has toolchanger bugs. Feels like we have to decide whether it is worth another $240 dollars beyond what we paid for the Easy ATC on the hope that they manage to update their firmware in the first year to support it.
Edit: I had the cost wrong
I jus got an e,ail direct from Masso It reads as follows:::

Hi Robert,
Thank you so much for your feedback about the new subscription option. We hear you, and we truly understand your concerns.
The subscription is totally optional, created only for advanced users who’ve requested powerful, specialized features. If those features aren’t something you need, you can continue using your controller and MASSO Link software with all existing features, forever, at no charge.
The MASSO G3 controller is here to stay. It’s our long-term platform, and we’ve intentionally chosen not to release new hardware just to push sales or upgrades. Instead, we’re committed to building new features for MASSO G3 because we believe that’s the best way to support our users long term.
As our users grow from hobbyists to serious makers to full-scale manufacturers, new ideas and needs naturally emerge. We want to keep supporting you on that journey rather than stop listening or developing once the hardware is sold.
Just to be clear, we’re still a small team of CNC makers, building MASSO with and for the community. Everything we’ve created, every feature, tool, and update, comes from your feedback.
That said, to keep building great software, running services like myWorkshop, and supporting our growing user base, this small US$19/month option helps support future development and infrastructure costs. And if there’s a future feature you want? You can just pay once to unlock it, no ongoing cost is required.
Thank you for being part of the MASSO journey.
If you have more questions, concerns, or feedback, please don’t hesitate to reach out, we’re here to support every member of the community.:::end
hope this helps all who have been following this whole thing and happy Friday HardtailSR.
Yeah I just got the same message, clear as mud.
