If you are zeroing the Z axis on material surface using zero block, and the tool path already knows its depth, then is it necessary to change depth spec in Vetric design? Would the material depth be irrelevant?

Not totally irrelevant, it can prevent you from making a mistake where you specify a tool path 1 inch deep into 1/2 inch thick material which would cut 1/2 inch into your waste board.

Being new all my tool paths are one depth right now, very simple carves…lol. Learning more every day.
