my latest project. The last supper. The part that is cut-out in the middle is going to be filled with epoxy to resemble a sunset. I may put an led in there as well. 1/4ball nose 180/90 for roughing and 1/16 spiral ball nose 50/20 for finishing. Around 18hrs total.

That is really nice Dog… what did you carve that in? From one solid piece? And 18hrs straight or pauses in between? Thanks for sharing

One solid piece of basswood. 23x14 1 1/2in thick. It still has its live edge on the top and bottom. Thinking about putting some led lights in that part to light it from the top and bottom. I broke it up into two days pausing it at night when it got too late.

Do you plan to trim off the top and bottom? It looks much thicker. Got to get me some Basswood! Thanks

first attempt at a photo v carve. .042 step over 60deg .04 doc 40/20ipm. I cut the top and bottom off of the last supper carve to answer that question.

Did you stain the board before or after?

I stained after and then sanded down the high parts… This almost took all the grooves down so it feels almost smooth but retained the color in the deeper groove parts. I used two small pieces of maple glued together just because it was some scrap I had laying around. It probably would have been more even had I just used one piece of wood. Oh little tip… I found using a brass brush brought out more detail in some of the parts that came out darker because of the thinness of the grooves. Also I will look for wood that has very little grain showing.

I have the solution to filters being clogged on shop vacs. Buy the bag that goes inside the shop vac. Worth every penny. It protects the filter and you get more consistent suction and airflow for many times longer than without using the bag. Also, it makes emptying so simple. And it helps the exhaust output less dust due to the added filtering of the bag.
