They are cut from one piece and painted very carefully, just don’t look too close
Really nice use of 1F as a tool in your shop! I wasn’t aware of the Dragknife Gadget in VCarve. It looks like I’ll need to invest in a new tool now, thanks!
I needed a small (0.275" OD) metal bushing for a shop project and was trying to figure out how I was going to make one without a lathe. Then I remembered I had some scrap aluminum sheet which was just the right thickness. A 1/16" end mill on the CNC with shallow cut depths and slow feed/plunge rates worked fine cutting the aluminum bushing.
With one child left at home, we’ve mostly given up eating dinner at the table. Instead, we take it down to the family room with the big screen TV. Everyone was getting tired of balancing plates, drinks, silverware, snacks (whose got time to go back upstairs to get a snack?!?), etc. I designed and built these nesting trays.
Played with some terrain models. Need to rework it for a 1/8 ball nose as that is good enough detail and will speed it up a ton… The 12" square ones (small) took 5 hours when setup for a 1.5mm TBN with 10% stepover. I should be able to at least halve that or more… Jerk is only set to 5000 so have some room there too most likely but 15000 didn’t like the number of segments on the western side of the state this I have 3 not 4 little ones. Large was a 24" square. Took way Langer than I want to admit…
That’s a really sweet project. Epoxy inlay?
Thanks, @Off-kilter!
Yes, it’s epoxy inlay in cherry. Everyone got to choose their favorite color that they thought would look good with the wood’s color.
Great work
Where is a good place to get terrain/state maps for CNC
Thanks
I use a site called terrain2stl
Great idea.
What is the material?
If metal, what feeds & speeds did you use?
Just Baltic Birch plywood.
2’ x 8’ Mudroom bench seat of Spalted Maple with Apple and Black Walnut inlays. A lot of layout but cuttings was pretty simple, just change your X-Y home for each. Drew up circles and odd shapes in V-Carve pro.
There is also the beginnings of a charcuterie board made from cut off of spalted maple as well as a 20" x 44" Kentucky White Pine with Black walnut inlay and center strip. Was my test piece, glad I did it. The color of the epoxy bled into the surrounding wood. I used sanding sealer on the bench holes and plugs. Had no issue with running there
I absolutely love this Todd! Excellent work, very creative and masterfully done.
Kudos’

Thanks a bunch - lots of layout work - looking forward to doing more like this. They become easier as i go since I’m saving all the cut files to be used for the next
I love the carve, nice and crisp. The first thought that came to mind when I saw it was to epoxy fill for defined areas. As I look at it, I wonder if the face and just the cross would be enough definition?
Yes Grant I am think you’ve right, just the cross and the face, will have to think about a suitable colour
Dave
PS you’re welcome to the vcarve file if you want it
Making this Breyer Horse barn for a good friend’s daughter. This is the prototype. Final will be in Russian Birch plywood. Has cupola, spindles between stalls, and sliding barn doors for each stall. All mortise and tenon, with exterior carving on each piece for character. 15 pieces in the assembly which cuts from one 4x8x .75 sheet. It’s about 18 inches high with a 30 x 24 ground footprint.
Preston, what are the dimensions of that cribbage board? And do you recall the source of the design?
Thanks
