Workshop Thinktank

How’s it going everyone! This will be the first forum ive ever joined so if I’m doing something wrong bare with.

My situation is not unique im sure but Ive hit a wall and im hoping someone can shed light on what mah actually be the only option.

So;
the research- check
the Idea - check
the capabilities- check
the chosen Onefinith Elite Forman added to my cart ready for purchase -CHECK!

The problem?
I live in a f**king apartment ( can we curse here or what)
Space aside, i could move to a 2 bed but the noise, dust would be an issue and not just for the neighbors.

Ive looked at buying a box truck, soundproofing it and putting a Jenny in.
Looked at makerspaces ( none available would work)
Even containers. Too expensive.

So ive come to the realization I need to bite the bullet and be a normal person and rent a place with a garage to put a worshop in, probably like most makers butI figured what the hell ill ask the experienced. Any thoughts???

I live in Vancouver rigbt now, most likely moving to Victoria BC region soon.

Thanks all

I feel for your situation Lain! Even after moving into your workshop you may find that, like many of us, it just may not be large enough in the end. Good luck with your quest but try to imagine for the future as much is reasonable.

My first shop was an unfinished bathroom in my parents house when I was growing up. I’ve since worked from a spare bedroom in my mobile home, then a shed, then a new place with a garage, then to renting a shop, and finally to building a 3500 square foot studio. “A real overnight success!” It only took me 40 years to get here. My Elite is still parts on a shelf at Onefinity but probably very close to assembly.

My point is to start small and grow. You’re right that the apartment won’t lend itself to the noise of a router. (Any power tools, probably)

When you do have a place and noise won’t be a concern, consider a smaller machine and have that help you grow larger.

Have you looked at storage units? I had one that a guy near it had a unit he grabbed electric from the light mounted on the wall and was doing a fair amount of power tool use in it. He closed the door and tended to avoid busy times and I don’t believe he ever got ratted out. Maybe not the most straightforward way to get a workshop but maybe doable depending on the rules for storage units where you are. Ours had rules about not living in them and not making a mess outside (& you had to clean out the inside when you vacated the unit) but didn’t seem to have too much going on in terms of actively enforced restrictions.

Storage units crossed my mind but yeah I figured I epuldnt get away with it. I may dig a little deeper on that idea tho.

Thanks for the words everyone ! Much appreciated!
