And you thought they smelled bad on the outside.

Hi Roger, do you mind sharing the laser power, speed, and LPI settings you used to achieve this? Which laser did you use, 7W, 14W or the 24W. I have the 24W Jtech. I tried several settings to engrave my son’s name on the tumbler but I can’t get it to come out as shiny. I still see the individual lines of the laser path and they dare darker. Thank you.

Christmas gift for dad, just needs a little sanding.

Another tooling project for work, crossmember profile gages. They’re not real impressive looking because I didn’t bother to polish the faces, but the accuracy is dead-on. These are 7075 aluminum, which cut really nice.

A plaque for my Granddaughters room. She loves Alligators. Go figure.
3 hr carve, design work was planet art for the Capitol A, melia was done in Sketchup and exported as a 3d model. Aspire11.5 for the Cam work. Jenny bits for the cutting.

That is an awesome sign! I am sure she will love it!

That was with a jtech 4.2w diode laser I had leftover from my xcarve from back in the day. It wouldn’t do great on some cups/colors and engrave all the way through the powdercoating and you have to go very slow. I moved onto a CO2 laser and moved the rotary attachment to it. That’s what I use now when engraving tumblers. It’s much faster and easier. Also a good cleaning after helps it look a lot better. I use a magic eraser and some powder coating cleaner. Works really good. But you can look up other more common cleaners people use. As for settings I’m not sure I remember. I know power was max. LPI was pretty high (I don’t remember exactly what number as it was a trial and error thing). I also probably did two cuts or cross hatch with the diode laser.

This is more of a first step in what will likely be a long project, but it might be of interest here for both CNC and laser users.

In 1975 my Mom and Dad didn’t have any money, but my Mom was an artist and my Dad was an excellent engineer and budding woodworker. So he made this breadboard from 1/2” plywood (this was when it was actually 1/2”) and a piece of long-leaf pine and she painted it for my paternal grandparents for Christmas. It hung in their little Iowa farmhouse kitchen for 40+ years until both passed.

My Dads brothers and sisters started a Christmas in July/reunion and I want to give each something unique to me but still tied to our family. So I’m going to take the text from the board (old Norwegian Childs prayer) and do a walnut and maple inlay cutting board for each one.

Now, this is where it’s useful for the community. I downloaded Procreate on my iPad and bought a cheap ($20) Apple Pencil knockoff on Amazon. I was able to trace the letter smoothly and import them into Vectric using the bitmap trace. It works beautifully and together the app and pencil were less than $35.

That’s a lovely thing to do. The whole family will remember it and you may inspire some grandchildren to do the same in 30 or 40 years.

Hot off the CNC. Need to finish and route handles. But I’m pleased. There were a few mistakes but nothing I couldn’t recover from. Size is 23.5 x 12.

If I were to put this on Etsy what would a fair price be? I have about 10 hours total spread over a week. Honestly, I’m happy just to get enough to cover the costs of my hobby.

Nice looking project.

Done with carving, three panels made of white oak each about 30" tall (76ish cm), 20" wide (50ish cm) and about 3/4" (2cm) thick.

Design was a heavily modified topographic map, all done in Vcarve and cut with a 1/4" upcut bit. The finishing pass helped clean things up a lot.

Not sure how I plan to seal/stain it. The panels keep cupping which is annoying.
Overall happy with how it turned out!

You might glue them to plywood panels with construction adhesive. That should help with the cupping once you seal the top surface.
